This was so much fun!!! While the story itself may have familiar beats, I loved the cast. Loch was definitely the main character but everyone had their own distinct voices that really held their own.
I think my fave was Dairy, a precious boy!! Really gave me the same vibes as mob from mp100 and Conrad from d20 mentopolis.
Things got kinda confusing with the magic system (I still don't really know how the world works) and with fight scenes (honestly had no idea where and when that gold guy popped up). Also mixed feelings about the romance stuff
(at first I thought tern was crushing on desidora and didn't realize she thought of her as a romantic rival??)

Ululenia and Dairy?? Sus. I know it would definitely raise a lot more flags if the genders were flipped. (Yes I know it's not about the age but...still... 🤔).
Overall I thought the conclusion was satisfying (yay no cliffhanger) and I'll definitely check out the sequel.

This was fast-moving and churned through plot - not a problem itself, but the author’s style of skipping over or eliding key details to facilitate a double-cross or plot twist (of which there are many) made it a little hard to follow sometimes. The sheer number of twists brought down the stakes a bit too, since you could safely assume that nearly everything that happened would not end up being what it seemed. But all in all it was a lot of fun, and I thought tackled race and class issues uniquely for high fantasy, so I will probably keep reading the series.
