Good Lord...
The more I read and become slightly more literate, the more it pains me to keep reading manga. In many ways, Dr. Stone is like the early work of Stan Lee, like a visually upgraded version of the comics from the 50s and 60s which relied heavily on exposition and disrespected the intelligence of the reader to figure out things by themselves.
Very little is presented here that isn't explained to a pulp. So much so, in fact, that whatever information is not outright stated, but instead presented graphically is so poorly telegraphed it is obvious the writer cares more about Holmes-explaining the solution to things than to let the reader SEE it by themselves.
I used to think that much of the mediocrity with manga came about because of illustrators being in charge of the writing, but I did not factor in the possibility of having a writer that doesn't trust his own illustrator enough to present the story without having to expose unnecessary information all over a frame.
Manga needs to branch out. Manga writers and illustrators need to look at the way storytelling is presented in American comics with writers like Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Jeff Lemire. Manga has a lot of good and original methods of displaying graphic information but it has become this inbred genre that only feeds on itself, never expanding to new, uncharted territory.
And it is sad because the premise of Dr. Stone, and the story itself, IS good and interesting.
