If you want to know why your almost-seven year old is driving you nuts, pick this one up. I'm not sure how much help it's really going to give you (this seemed a bit less helpful than other volumes in the series) but at least you know it's *not* you and you are not crazy...though you may be nuts by the time your child turns 8!
I love this series of books. They are dated - but right on! Simple, approachable and insightful. I find them a big help and they always garner at least a few belly laughs. 'Your Seven-Year-Old' is no different.
I always manage to read the books in this series right when I am convinced I have forever screwed up my children and failed as a parent. My takeaways from this one- 7 year olds are overwhelmingly negative and this disequilibrium phase lasts an entire year.
For people who've never read this series, they are very dated but chock full of great developmental information.

I always find these book useful but this one wasn't quite as illuminating as I have found past ones (could be because they aren't changing as rapidly).

While this was written in 1985 and therefore has some outdated language and ideas especially around gender, I found the casual, relaxed, and matter-of-fact manner refreshing in a world of constant diagnoses. These doctors are reassuring about typical behavior for seven year olds, and even parental concerns about atypical behavior, which garnered many suggestions, pretty much none of which included "see your doctor for a diagnosis." Still relevant despite it's age and shortcomings. I wish someone would come out with an updated version!
Basically, 7-year-olds are emo af, which is what I've been seeing around my house as well.
Really wish these could get an update. There are lots of books on the development of babies month by month and toddlers year by year. Looking at the general trends older kids go through year by year is such a useful tool, but these are severely outdated.
Some helpful reassurances about typical seven-year-old behavior. Published in the mid 1980s, and discussions of gender have not aged well.
Dated, but a helpful reminder that some of the behaviors that are driving me nuts--unwillingness to answer questions or be hugged, clowning--are all characteristic of this generally inward-focused age.
