This is much the same as [b:others|6078885|Please Don't Go|Elizabeth Benning|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1345219618s/6078885.jpg|6255525] [b:of|2279731|Katie|Deborah Aydt|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1261092356s/2279731.jpg|1771714] [b:its|2095857|Toughing It Out (Crosswinds, #3)|Joan Oppenheimer|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1349936977s/2095857.jpg|2101220] [b:general|646728|The Hunger Scream|Ivy Ruckman|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1238175115s/646728.jpg|632875] [b:ilk|43639|Emily's Secret No One Can Find Out|Linda Barr|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1170161139s/43639.jpg|43062]: written with a fairly basic understanding of the issues at hand; not a lot of complexity; a tie-it-up-with-a-bow resolution.
Two things stuck out here: first, the book was published in the early 90s, but the dialogue reads much, much earlier -- the author grew up in the 1950s and 60s, and I suspect that her childhood memories strongly influenced the way the characters talked in this book. (It's also worth noting that the side plots are sometimes unintentionally comedic -- for example, Jessie's parents are at wit's end when it comes to her troublemaking brother, and her father is considering banishing her brother to military school. His crimes? Talking back, drinking milk straight out of the carton...)
The other thing: the author wrote the [b:Magic Attic|872617|The Secret of the Attic (Magic Attic Club, #1)|Sheri Cooper Sinykin|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1179086072s/872617.jpg|1994359] books! My memories of them are faint but fond, and that little burst of nostalgia was worth my mild disappointment that this book didn't stretch outside the box.
