I liked how the stories were interconnected and the Tao chapters were compelling. The other two less so -unlikeable characters and anachronism that made it hard to suspend disbelief.

So as with Lunde’s other book, the pace is sort of slower and there is still the collectivist society translation issue for me. That said, I really enjoyed it! It is one of the futures I fear and she created worlds that felt authentic, particularly in 2007 and 2098.

Three well-written, engaging, loosely inter-connected stories. I found myself getting a little annoyed by the switching viewpoint, as I was just getting invested in one character's storyline when we jumped to a different story in a different time period. I felt I could never get going. That being said, all the stories are enjoyable.

A story through the ages about people who make life miserable for everyone around them: special focus on their partners who try to keep them afloat, and their children who have the audacity to not be exactly like they are. Come for the inability to express emotions in a healthy way, and stay for the self pity!
The saddest part about the book is not about the bees, it is that those kinds of people feel very real. I didn't particularly feel like I gained anything from reading about how life is from their perspective. They didn't redeem themselves in a single way. This is more of a how-to guide for sucking joy out of life for the people around you and making yourself the center of attention.
Aside from that, a speculative fiction about what would happen if the bees disappeared from the world is interesting, and very impactful. As an idea. Not so much in this book. Not every future speculation needs to end up in a nuance-free dystopian future with ALL democracies collapsing. The disappearance of bees just became another zombie patient zero, which eats into the environmental message I think the book was trying to make.
Also, it is not the disappearance of honey bees that will have the biggest impact in the world. It is the wild bees. That is a misconception, and as such even the good premise here is somewhat factually incorrect.
The choppy language with short sentences was hard to read. And how many times can you write that someone is "trying to sound/look smug". In what world is that a good thing? Why would anyone try to do that?

I don't really know what to think of this book. For most of it, it felt like it didn't quite know where it was going. The ending was surprisingly strong and I loved how the three stories came together and everything was tied up. But there were 400 pages before that and unfortunately, they didn't convince me quite as much.
I also don't know what to think of the three main characters. None of them were particularly nice or interesting protagonists and I didn't like how some of their issues were resolved, especially with William and George. I generally didn't enjoy most of the male characters in the book. There were so many misogynistic passages that just weren't necessary at all.
Tao's story was definitely the most compelling of the three, but again, I'm not sure how much I liked it. It almost felt too easy in parts. I guess I just expected a bit more from this book. The cover is very pretty though.
Will I still read the second book? Probably. Curse you, writing that was suddenly really good at the end.
