I thought I would relate to this book so hard but I found myself disgusted at every character in every situation. I ended up hate-reading it. The redeeming quality that earned it 2 stars is its occasional self-aware humor.

Five stars for this part alone.
"Pilates isn't really a weight-loss tool," he says. "Pilates is more about creating stability."
"I would love some stability, too. I'm always so, like," and here I make a face suggesting I'm someone with a lack of stability.

This was an interesting read. Kind of reminded me of the book Pineapple Street. At times it felt as if I was on my phone reading something off Instagram. But it was also messy and real and I stayed up to finish it. I was conflicted on the ending and went to look up what other people thought and then stopped myself because I instantly thought of the presence social media had throughout the book and the whole point of it being this overcoming aspect of our lives. So I guess the book surprised me in that way- and how quickly I put my phone down.

The authors voice comes through crystal clear through the well developed characters and arcs she’s devised for this debut novel. It leaves you with a lot to think about. But is, at the same time, very readable, quick, and even funny. It hits many of the right notes for me.
