I have been a fan of Dexter since the first season came out, but I have never read any of the books. SO when I first started on goodreads I noticed this as a first-reads giveaway. Well, I was fortunate enough to win my first Dexter book.
I am always one to say the book was better than the movie but in this case... I prefer the television version of Dexter. I have not read any of the other books and those my change my mind but right now I was not impressed. The first two thirds of this book seemed to drag on and I found myself finding excuses to not read. I even downloaded the audio book so I could just finish and move on. I however didn't listen to it and read on till I finished.
Aside from the book being slow and the description making me fear an over abundance of cheese I did enjoy this. By the end it got good and managed to keep a steady pace until the very end but as I said, it took my two thirds off the book before it got interesting. Dexter of course has grown and made a few changes in his life. The biggest being the birth of his Daughter Lilly Ann, were most reviews didn't like this side to Dexter I enjoyed it. Being a new Dad a year ago I could relate to his irrational fear of letting his new baby leave to hospital because she was not safe in the cruel violent world beyond those doors. It did make me chuckle a bit to know that the fictional Dexter felt the same way I did the first time my wife and I brought our Son home. Over all I give this a sold 3 stars because it was entertaining but slow.

That was the most well constructed book of the series thus far. There was actual detective work, some not too obvious hints for the reader that went completely over the narrator’s head, some mystery, suspense, a bit of emotion and finally an ending with a closure and not the abrupt ending of the earlier books.

The fifth part of Dexter's literary exploits. Though the first novel bore a certain semblance to the first TV Season the show already strayed from the book in a number of areas. From book 2 on TV series and novels became independent of each other which is nice as one can enjoy both incarnations and still be surprised about the plots without fear of spoilers as they mainly go different ways.
I absolutely love the TV show though I only ever got to like the books. Though enjoyable the books seem to lack that certain je-ne-sais-quois that the TV version has in bundles. Lindsay is a decent author but he's not terrific. Some of the "Dark Passenger" mumbo jumbo can get quite repetitive at times and the books are often predictable. In this book e.g. there are two major "surprises" that he spoilt by clues that weren't just spelt with a Capital C but also Capital L, U and Es.
Still, it's a fast enjoyable read and the idea of Dexter battling a bunch of modern day vampires/cannibals in Miami while getting to terms with having a baby and seeing his brother return make up for good decent entertainment.
What amused me, however, was seeing some hardcore modern-day vampires being defined by their love for TWILIGHT. Seriously, no proper horror fan would EVER consider these teenage soap story books/films as an entry level drug for gruesome real life murders.

How much I lov s Den in the series. Here she is so f-ing stupid character. Even in the previous ones she want ideal. But in this one. She is unsufferable. And Dexter is still very much arrogant and thinks how incredibly genius he is. Just no.

3-1/2 stars really... Not my favorite Dexter book but it still left me excited about the next one.

Heard on audiobook by the author. So good to get back to Dexter and his case against the Cannibal Coven. Witty and often gruesome, it was a fun read.
