One of the best picture books about death I've seen.

Grandma and granddaughter love fall. They have a tradition of dancing in the leaves and sipping tea. In November and December, her health declines and she dies. It is up to her granddaughter, through her grief, to keep up her grandmother's traditions.

Poetically written and made me cry. A book on loss and holding loved ones in your world and heart after they've gone.

A book about grandma and granddaughter, who enjoy drinking warm tea and playing in the leaves in autumn. But each month, grandma's health declines until she passes away. The grandchild mourns her loss quietly, but the next autumn, she dances in the leaves again with grandma's spirit swirling in the leaves around her. Barefoot Books publishes this, using environmentally sustainable sources of paper. A similar book is Grandpa's Stories by Joseph Coelho.

This book blew me away! Wonderfully illustrated with evocative details to convey passing seasons, loss of life, and healing of the heart, DANCE LIKE A LEAF shines bright with its lovely literary devices (especially assonance and consonance), layered text and symbolic, sentimental sequencing, and vibrant and sensory-filled language. There's so much heart presented in this book: grandparent and grandkid bonding, caring in thoughtful ways, losing a loved one, treasuring memories, and the therapeutic power of time. So beautifully created.

A loving, gentle, and simple look at loss. A girl and her grandmother share many special moments together: drinking tea, appreciating the seasons, dancing under the autumn leaves. As time goes on, though, grandma participates less and less.

Eventually, the grandmother passes on, leaving the young girl lonely and sad. But she finds a way to reconnect with the memories she has of her grandmother. Tying the personal loss to the seasons as they pass was an elegant backdrop for a difficult moment.

The illustrations are bright and warm, featuring all the most lovely fall colors and evoking the vibrancy of this relationship. I was concerned a bit that this young girl had no other support — it was just her and her grandmother, and then it was just her. In picture book world, I can accept that this was just a hyper focus on this relationship, and that parents or friends existed beyond the periphery. But I can’t say it didn’t weigh on me, watching this girl take on the burden of care and grief on her own.

A little girl and her grandmother share a cup of tea, bundle up in multiple scarves, and dance with the autumn leaves. But as the months go by, the grandmother begins to decline. She can't get out of bed, but the little girl paints the trees for her on a canvas full of autumn color. When the grandmother dies, her granddaughter still remembers how she was taught to dance with the leaves and enjoy a warm cup of tea. The moments of joy that they shared will never be lost.

My emotions!!! This is so beautiful and sad. It really packs an emotional punch straight to the heart. The grandmother is such a joyful and free spirit, and she teaches her granddaughter to love nature and enjoy life. Seeing the little girl grieve for her grandmother and honor her legacy is truly touching and sweet.

I love the colorful illustrations in this book! The spirit of autumn is captured perfectly in the falling leaves and beautiful landscapes. The art style is bright and fun, bringing a hopeful attitude to the story.

I love everything about this book! It would be wonderful to share with a child who has lost a grandparent. It might help them to talk about their grief in a healthy way, maybe cry a little, and hold onto precious memories and family traditions that make us who we are.
