Dnf. Never grabbed me like Tiger's Wife did. The writing is of a high quality but something about the story just didn't strike a chord for me.

I had an unusual amount of trouble keeping up with the story on this one. Many times I looked back through the book trying to figure out what I'd missed. I also didn't find the ending satisfying. My questions were more inferred than actually answered. The cameleering history was interesting but overall I just wasn't impressed.

2.6/5 stars, full review to come! The idea was great and the writing was good but literally what happened, why did it happen, WHEN did it happen... I can hardly tell ya.

I was really feeling this at the start. The writing is wonderful, but painfully slow at times. I'm finding it hard to care about these characters as the story meanders along. I really wanted to love this. 😭

Nora, a homesteader living in the Arizona Territory in the 1830’s, begins a tumultuous day at home with a lack of water, husband, and her two oldest sons. Interspersed in this main narrative is the story of two men who ride with the unlikely US Camel Corps leading up to the Civil War years.

Overall I enjoyed this book, but it dragged quite a bit, especially during the Lurie chapters. I did like the twists and turns.

Really liked The Tiger's Wife, was fighting for my life to finish this audiobook though. Liked the camel!

I found this book entirely tedious and frustrating. It’s slow, there’s little to no plot, the revelations about the characters are mediocre and not worth the time put into learning them, and the ending falls flat. I should have DNF’d.
