This wasn’t what I expected at all. I’m pretty sure her ideas were quite revolutionary when they came about, but I found her approach to be somewhat hopeless. The basic idea that no one gets their needs met in childhood and we perpetuate the deficits through the generations is likely true on some level, but there wasn’t a lot offered in how to remedy the ongoing issues these cycles create.

loved the first half, felt a bit lost in the second half… still good- just dense. i listened to the audiobook but feel this would be a good one to get a paper copy of for further study

I found this book to be outdated- in prose, ideas, conviction. Miller may have good insights yet i didn't feel connected to her writing style and have read the same ideas by other authors that present such material in a clearer- concise way.
I found her writing style to be arrogant and haughty. There's a lot of hype around this book. I would look elsewhere.

A fascinating and informative read that left me wanting to track down the rest of Miller's work. Sometimes I felt the author writes with a little too much vitriol towards the religious, or those who practise BDSM for example, and it comes across as shaming. With that said, clearly the author has very strong opinions about the reasons why people are religious or those drawn towards certain sexual preferences and practises. I'm not certain I fully agree. But perhaps the author would argue I'm not best placed to judge. It's complex. I would not recommend this book to those beginning their recovery journey/those who are trying to work through their trauma without the support of an excellent therapist.

Very very enlightening! Some amazing truths and facts, some great points of views as well. Really helpful to understand more about someones’ own childhood.

Someone I knew marked this as read on their account and it caught my interest. I’ve got to say that I absolutely hate elements of how this book is written. The author/translator manically switches between gender pronouns and needlessly genders everything.

My initial hatred for this book aside, I feel that there are a lot of gems in it. I know several things hit very close to home for me. It’s definitely a heavy (emotionally) read.

I still recommend it though and I hope I can apply some of the principles to my own life.

Completely changed my view on my childhood and has been fundamental in my growth as a therapist.
