This is a book about the author’s mother and the tale of a son. A story about growing up and watching your mother as you age and mature. The revelation that all the while you have also been seeing her age and go through changes. It’s a story about not having the tools to save her or give her the help that she needs as a kid; and the helplessness, frustration and anger that come from that and may get misdirected at her. Then there’s also her anger, helplessness and frustration that is sometimes misdirected at the child who still doesn’t  understand the full scope of who that woman is and her path of becoming herself — the choices she has made and the ones that were made for her. This is about the life changing revelation experienced by a child when they learn to see the woman that precedes the mother. The disarming power of empathy, love, relatability, understanding and forgiveness — the healing of a mother and her son.

A Woman's Battles and Transformations from Édouard Louis is my 4th book from the author and it was just as good as all the other books I've read from Louis. I thought this book was the last book from Louis that has been translated into Finnish so I was cherishing reading this book but turns out there is still one more book from him for me to read in Finnish.

A Woman's Battles and Transformations is in a way a continuation to his previous work Who Killed My Father and is a story about Louis' mother. This novel follows his mother from a woman who's life and dreams were taken from her when she became pregnant and had to drop out of school. Eventually she fell into misery, a poor woman whose life is all about submitting to her alcoholic husband and raising her children. When she gets out of that relationship with her two childred, she meets Édouard's father who seems better but eventually turns into exactly what her previous husband had been.

After 20 years in marriage with Édouard's father and raising 5 children, she is done pleasing her husband and calls one night to Édouard to inform him that she has chosen to divorce her husband and move from a small town in rural France into Paris.

This is a story about a son who drifts away from his mother and starts to resent her for everything she isn't. He wishes his mother raised him with a better father-figure and in a much more stable house.

I saw much of my own mom (äiti) in this story. My father is great and their marriage is completely healthy but everything else seemed to hit. Me and my mom have always had a complex relationship that is almost impossible to put into words.

Just like every other book from this author, this is a stunning novel filled with gorgeous language only Louis is capable of! I definitely recommend picking up this book!

Okunsun.
