The book wasn't poorly written. It just wasn't really its own story. It was like reading an extended version of the lore entry on the League of Legends wiki.

A lot of things lined up because they had to, because the lore was already established and this book was just fleshing out some details. The author had little to no choice about what the characters did, where they went, or anything like that. He did an admirable job trying to turn it into a story, but overall the whole thing was just so flat.

I think that this might be a lesson in reading freelance writing set in an established IP. And that lesson would be, don't do that. Or maybe, don't do that if the writing is rehashing some known lore, at the very least. If this story had been set in the setting's present time and went in a new direction not already known, it might have worked. I'm not sure, but maybe.

Anyway, I actually *hate* the fact that Kalista went into a forest just so that astute readers could be like "OOH IT'S MAOKAI". I got the reference. It made me take a full star off my review. Please don't include scenes that don't advance the story or characters.

This follows the same type of storytelling that league of legends has done for years. It's good strong storytelling focusing on adventure and magic.

Pretty solid fantasy novel even without knowing anything from league of legends. The occasional name dropping is a plus for fans. Only the end feels a little bit constructed. As league fan is 4 stars.
