Sehr gelungenes Buch!

Did not like this book. While I was really excited to read about this time of history in Germany, it came from the perspective of Rath, so there isn't much to salvage. The main character is mean spirited, inconsistent, and just generally unlikable to me, and each time I thought 'okay he might not be that bad maybe' he's just have the worst internal monologue. Giving this two stars because I like a mystery and so the detective parts of the plot were okay, but even then there wasn't much to stand on, and it concludes in an unsatisfying way, I thnk. Let's hope the show is better.

Quite different from the show! But not necessarily in a bad way. I prefer Charlotte from the book, she's more independent than the damsel from the show. I can see why they changed so many things; the book is largely about the crime while the show is more about the man.
Hate to say it, but I prefer the show.

I will be honest: I wish this book had a second author.
I have read this book in Italian, but I had the chance to take a look at the German version, therefore I feel pretty confident in saying that the style is quite boring, predictable for a crime novel.

Same goes for the characters: quite basic, easily relatable, prototype that hardly ever get to be more than that.

BUT
the atmosphere is great. I love Berlin, I love the 20s and I especially love Berlin in the 20s and the care used to rebuild the city at the time shows despite everything and really hits you.
I even forgive the slightly stereotyped plot because of its clever usage of conspiracy theories of the time and prejudices common among the population.

I will probably give a chance to the second book, namely because this was a first attempt and I am hoping Volker Kutscher got better in the mean time.

Sekavahko.
