Cute, in the vein of [b:One for the Money|6853|One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1)|Janet Evanovich|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1316730230s/6853.jpg|1486401], really anything by [a:Janet Evanovich|2384|Janet Evanovich|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1478729372p2/2384.jpg]. No sex though it is implied by the title. Easy read.

I usually DNF a book because I don't care, but this time it was because I actively disliked it. I didn't like Sophie, I didn't like her love interest, I didn't like the constant references to her weight and dieting, none of it. So I went to the end and figured out who the murderer was and quit.

A mixed race Jewish crime author, a smexy Russian P.I., and a group of friends that turn into amateur sleuths...what could go wrong?

While this book was hilarious, it had some major setbacks that I just couldn't stand. Sophie, our author, and Anatoly, our Russian private investigator - are just a TRAIN WRECK. Sophie's friends just add on to the mayhem.

The main thing that set me off is the fact that while Israel was spoken about in a light tone- Zionism was not even discussed. We know that Anatoly has a military background in the Russian army and the IDF - but we get no insight into the Zionism issue. It's almost as if the book is trying to stay neutral and I don't like that - which is why it gets no ratings.

We get humor like this:

'"Racism aside, this is still a democracy. They can’t lock people up for no reason.”
“You’re a white girl, huh?”
“Half of me is really offended by that.”

But then we'd also get this:

"You could stand up to terrorists in the Middle East but you don’t think you can handle yourself against little old me?” ...like wtf is that supposed to mean???

This book was written a couple years back but it's still no excuse. I am reading/skimming ahead to the other books in the series just to see if anything is different but you won't be hearing any ratings/reviews from me if nothing is different. It is what it is

This was the first book I read when I moved to SF. Picked up an advance uncorrected proof of the book from the "share shelf" at Maxfield's House of Caffeine where I would go for internet before I had it set up in my new place.

Fun girly-murder mystery set in San Francisco (of course!) Easy read, breezy style, the heroine is quirky and ridiculous and you can't help but like her. There is a murderer on the loose who is killing artists in the manner of death scenes in their movie/ book etc. And she thinks that she is next.

Fun read, definitely not one of the best I've ever read but still a very a good book. The main character Sophie and her friends were quite amusing and it was a good story line. A little bit chick-lit plus some mystery (I seem to be reading a few of these lately) is always good.

Pretty standard crime procedural like storyline but poorly executed.
adventurous mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

Took a while to pick up but it was a pretty good mystery.

I was not a fan of this book. I felt the characters were super annoying and I found the story hard to get into. I also think a lot of the terms and phrases seem quite dated.

Another fun Cozy Mystery! Sophie, a mystery writer, finds herself in the middle of a real mystery that threatens her own life. Kyra keeps the story light and funny and got me to laugh out loud a number of times, which is huge since it takes a lot to get me to do that!

I look forward to reading the other four books in the series.

This was a cute murder mystery with a few jokes here and there. The main character fell flat for me. She is biracial, as is the author, and yet it still read as if someone who is not Black wrote the book. I enjoyed it for what it was but I will not bother with the rest of the series.
