I appreciate this touching on a neat story from history, but the story wasn't my style.

Potential Spoiler: I don't mind romance, but I don't enjoy drama about people pretending they're just friends but their relationship is obviously not just friends for such an extended period of time. I also don't enjoy love triangles that involve someone clearly not over another person and them getting tangled up in romance that doesn't fit their character within their relationship they have with the person the truly love. I know the author tried to do this in a non-angsty and believable way, but it was still a turn off to me.

I enjoyed reading this book, but there were some flaws as well. I was interested in Audrey’s struggle between what she wants and what society wants, as well as her training experiences. However some relationship details that made up the majority of the book felt a bit drawn out and like “filler”. Her misread of some of her friend’s letters and her conflict with some of the gossipy women at the training camp were a bit off putting or annoying.

The biggest problem for me was that the event that is presented as the major conflict on the cover flap (Audrey’s friend/potential love interest MIA in Europe) only happened in the very last few chapters of the book. As I neared the halfway point of the book I was expecting the big event to drop at any moment but it just...didn’t. I felt distracted as I read through the middle of the story because I just couldn’t help but wonder when “it” would happen. When the event finally did happen, it proved a bit less exciting and harrowing than one might expect based on the cover summary.

I love a good love story and this one was interesting until the ending, which I didn't enjoy. It would have been 4 stars if not for the - I felt - mediocre ending. However, I felt that the obsessing over men the entire book was out of character for the main character, as she claims she has no interest in men/marriage, settling down and having kids; yet that is pretty much the entire book.

A classic love story that makes anyone proud of the women who sacrificed so much to aid our nation during past wars and crises. As a serving Airman, I loved this story and the pride it instilled in me.

BLURB:FROM BOOKBUB
""“unputdownable” USA Today bestseller (Debbie Macomber): During World War II, Audrey enlists in the Women Airforce Service Pilots program — where she forms unexpected bonds and discovers a renewed sense of purpose. “A powerful tale of courage and sacrifice” (USA Today bestselling author Sara Ackerman).""

WWII history has always been interesting to me---especially the roles of women who were as brave as the men who served, yet history has basically ignored them. I wanted to love this book and did enjoy much of it. The story is move love story than I expected, but it is still good. I am glad I read it.
I would recommend this read to those who enj0y a bit of romance drama along with the history.
