Emma Cline excels at writing women who know their power, yet are hopelessly lost, and girls playacting womanhood while slowly self-destructing. In The Guest, Alex has worn out her welcome with her summer boyfriend and she can't go back to the City. Stuck in the Hamptons while hiding from a former lover, she befriends a troubled teenager. Reading this was like watching a beautiful train wreck in slow motion.
