The book was fine in terms of writing and being easy to read quickly, but the whole story felt pretty pointless. The ending didn’t clear anything up and it was confusing why anything happened, there was no resolution (not in a thought-provoking way, just an unsatisfying way).  Nothing redeeming, just shitty situation after shitty situation.

Tom Ripley meets Holly Golightly kinda?
Emma Cline is the queen of writing feverish summer novels, and although the protagonist of “The Guest” is way less accessible than “The Girls” Evie, the writing is more dense and on point.

There are only very few moments where Alex’s true personality seems to shine through. The rest of the time she is just creating illusions of a person for everyone around her, and the one who is the most convinced seems to be herself. Alex just is completely delulu. You really have to admire her resilience, her determination to ignore all of her problems, which pile up to nobody’s fault but her own as she leaves a path of destruction on her quest to keep up the illusion (or the delusion).
“Was everything rising from the place she thought it was hidden? No, she told herself, no. Everything was fine.”

I could not put the book down, could not look away from the (literal) car crash waiting to happen. Personally I don’t mind wtf-is-going-on open-end no-plot-just-vibes stories, as long as the vibes are as immaculate as they are here. I could smell the sunscreen, feel the air-conditioned rooms of empty mansions, taste the day drinking, and see the glittering sun on the unused pools of rich people. This is my Brat Summer read, and not just because of the perfectly green cover.

I thought this book was really well written. The MC is an awful person, but like a dumpster fire you can’t look away from. Interesting and critical exploration of white feminity/ sexuality. Even though I enjoyed all these technical components, I am glad that it’s over and I don’t think I will be rereading.

Captivating in a stressful way! Alex, the protagonist in this book, is our modern day messy disaster that we strangely root for. Moreso to find some relief to the cringey and terrible positions she puts herself in. Looking forward to reading more of Cline’s books!
