I saw the cover, read a two sentences summary and went, "This would probably make a good audiobook." I took a leap and I'm happy about it! This was contemporary fiction with the majority of story and plot revolving around figure skating, the drama and bureaucracy that comes with it, and the romance found a tasteful place amongst all that. I think it read like a TV show, i.e. "Make It or Break It" or "Pretty Little Liars."

Wow. I loved this remix of Wuthering Heights set in the ice-skating world! More to come.

that was the craziest thing I’ve read in a long time. Literally so much happened I think I’m gonna have to stew for a bit in that before piecing together my thoughts

For an almost 450 page book, this flew by! Packed with plot, The Favorites moves at a fast pace appropriate for the sport at the center of it all. Going into it knowing nothing about ice dance - I thought it was the same as pairs skating! - presented no problems, as the technical aspects of the sport mattered less (to me) than the passion and artistry. The plot had some well-executed twists (pun intended) and I enjoyed the cast of supporting characters. Garrett, Ellis Dean, and Kirk - what a bunch of good, loyal guys!

The influence of Taylor Jenkins Reid radiated off the page. By the time I reached the acknowledgments, they confirmed that TJR had impacted not just the oral history format, but Layne Fargo's research and approach to the story. This felt like a fun discovery for a longtime TJR fan.

I'm already looking forward to reading Fargo's next book!

i don't even know what to think of this. this was very messy drama wise, and i do love a good mess but jesus.
i get why people eat this up, but that doesn't really include me.

this is a contemporary remake of wuthering heights, and I am told that it's not a very good take on the story.

the lack of Heath's voice in this was really a let down. I know they wanted to make it seem like Heath was a mystery, and how we don't learn much about him until we need to, but when it's a story where characters are personally telling a story, its not as impactful to me.

I'm not a major fan of the ending, it just was all too weird for me.

i HATED heath, i liked bella a bit more, but what they did together made me feel so gross. thats just a line crossed and i don't like how katarina forgave them, especially since bella got pregnant by heath because of what? their hookups which are physical releases? It was a whole thing about Heath being jealous over Katarina and Garett, but he's fine with sleeping with his soulmate's bestie multiple times???????? it's just not giving. I'm sure it was inspired by wuthering heights in the relationship drama, but it doesn't hold the conflict weight because it's in a contemporary setting.

This one just isn’t for me. I don’t love stories where all the characters are terrible and do terrible things to each other. Love triangles are also one of my least favorite tropes.
