I'm going to believe the stilted writing was due to it not translating to english well.

This was very different from the novels that I normally read. It was a very interesting story with a lot of plot twists.

No sabía que esperar de este libro, fue una sorpresa porque me gustó mucho. Es tranquilo pero adictivo, la manera de escribir de la autora no es nada complicada. La historia es interesante, todo desde el punto de vista de una mujer muy empoderada para su época. Y el arte, eso es lo que me ha encantado, la referencia a las pinturas y la cerámica.
Hay algunas cosas de la historia que no me han convencido del todo y en algunos momentos el patrón de viaje se hace muy repetitivo.
Algo que si se, es que quiero seguir leyendo a la autora.

Een tussendoortje. Vooral gelezen omdat het een cadeautje van mijn schoonmoeder was en ik haar die lol dan nog wel wil doen.

Taalgebruik is houterig, het verhaal vlak, heel vlak en eigenlijk is het alleen interessant vanwege de historische context.
Er zit geen flow in the tekst Het zingt niet naar me Het is leesbaar ja maar leest voor mij gewoon niet lekker . Door het simpele taalgebruik leest het vlot weg en dat is het meest positieve eraan.
Het lijkt alsof de schrijfster continue op zoek is naar houvast en haakjes maar niet uitwerkt tussen de historische haakjes.
Het boek is geschreven in een ik-vorm die te modern aandoet voor de tijd. De ik past niet in de 18e eeuw qua ‘mood” De onderdelen die het spannendst zouden moeten zijn zijn te feitelijk omschreven en dus nogal blah/meh/niet echt spannend

In andere commentaren heb ik dit boek omschreven zien staan als een historische roan met een vleugje romantiek. In mijn optiek is dat een onzinnige omschrijving; het is een flutromannetje (niveau Bouquet-reeks) in een ‘historische’ setting. De onderdelen die feitelijk zijn (echte geschiedenis) lopen beter, Ik denk omdat de schrijfster daar houvast had aan haar basis/referentieboeken en ook naar het schijnt iemand van de Porceleyne Fles.
Het is gewoon een flut romannetje met een verloren liefde door een misverstand of slechte communicatie met een goedmakertje aan het eind.

Ik geef uiteindelijk twee sterren omdat die onderdelen die gestoeld zijn op geschiedenis en waar de schrijfster duidelijk kan bouwen om anderen wel interessant zijn geschreven en lekker lezen Helaas gaat het daarbij maar om maximaal 15% van het boek dat leuk is.

The book was a gift from my Mother in law as she loved it. I read it in part because of the gift , thought and consideration in it (“The things we do for love”).

The style of writing is kinda wooden, without much flow. It has no joyful metre to it. It reads in a staccato fashion. This style results in a rather flat story with historical highlights that because it never engrossed me, became a quick and easy read.
The writer seems to be searching for context and has these little historical pins that hold up the story Hoever the fabric between the pins is just too weak.

The book has a narrator, it is written in the I-form. But the I is a modern girl, she is not an 18th century type of ’I’ . I don’t how to otherwise describe it. The parts that should have been scary or exciting are too factual and too little feeling resulting in a meh feeling.

Where the story is seeped in historical fact the story becomes better, more rounded. My personal opinion is that this is because the writer could build on a good solid base from her reference books and the help she received from somebody at the “Porceleyne Fles” .

I had seen it described in comments as a historical novel with a touch of romance, but quite honestly I think that is rather inaccurate. I would describe it as a romance novel (type; Barbara Cartland) set in an historically reasonably accurate context. I mean it is jut a love story about a love lost due to miscommunication and fluff that comes right on the last two pages.

In the end I have given it two stars, because the parts that are historically based are nice to read. It is where the writer is held by the hand by others, Unfortunately this is only about 15% of the book. The rest is not that good at all
