Allende's style is just not for me. I didn't like her transition from third to first person narration, and I felt the exposition was too slow. This was not a book I was excited to be reading after 50 pages.

Closer to 3.75 but rounding up. Some great moments but too many long-winded sections and an arduous amount of self loathing and despair to navigate.

What an incredibly frustrating albeit well-written book. It starts off lighthearted and innocent, then takes you to some really dark places of the human experience.

I despised the continual theme of negative sexual experiences. There was no redeeming love anywhere. Every single person just abusing others and being abused in every way. It made me want to shower every time I finished another chapter. Squicky!!!! Did not finish.
