Home Safe isn’t chick lit, not the way say, The Devil Wears Prada is, but it’s a woman’s book, if only because the relationship being explored is between two women. That said, if Berg is this emotionally on point all the time, I have no doubt I’ll be reading more of her work, and recommending it. Home Safe is a quick read, but not a ”fun” one, compelling but not addictive, leisurely but not slow. One gets the impression Elizabeth Berg has spent a lot of time watching people, because her characters feel like real people and this, more than anything else, is the book’s strength. The writing is just a vehicle to introduce you to Helen and Tessa, and they’re worth knowing.

I just finished reading home safe by Elizabeth Berg. I loved it....Ms. Berg captured what I have called "my walking depression." Meaning, I could get through the day, any outsider would thing I was fine...doing everything I was required to, but could not do any extra. I could not create, did not want to create, talked myself into the most mundane tasks and moods. Watching Helen stumble out of this prison and start to see the light was a gift. I'm so glad I picked up this novel.

Say what you want about weak characters, I don't consider myself a weak heroine and I could relate to Helen. Her self talks before her interview, the way she feels about the critical letter, her love of books, literature and writing as a healing process, it was all perfectly written. All people have similar self doubts, the difference is how open and honest you are with yourself.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The characters were believable and likeable. It tells the journey of a woman who loses her husband, unexpectedly, and how she copes with that and the life that continues around her.

Home Safe is another excellent novel by Elizabeth Berg. I wasn't initially attracted to this book because of the boring title and cover art, but Elizabeth Berg is one of my favorite authors, so I decided to read it anyway. The main character is recently widowed with a grown daughter that she still tries to micro-manage. This book, like all of Berg's novels, is well written with believable characters and dialogue. Plus, it's set in Chicago.

As I was reading it for a bookclub, I pushed through to the end. I am glad that I did. The characters were a bit annoying at times, and while the mother/daughter relationship sounded realistic, there were times I wanted to give them each a reality check. The ending redeamed the book for me.

I read a lot of Elizabeth Bergs novels, and like most of them-admittedly when I read some of the reviews here, I almost reconsidered reading it but I am glad I did not-I liked Helen, she was whiney and overly connected to her daughter, but she was recently widowed, going thru a career crisis and trying to learn how to do everything her husband used to do around the house and in dealing with their money. She grew a lot in the course of the book, and we met some great secondary characters along the way.
