This is a multigenerational horror story. Caught by abusive men, the women become their own form of monsters. Add in a house that is home to shadows, that hides things behind walls and in cupboards, and the tale is grimmer still.

I do not know a lot about Spanish history, but I assume the subtext here is the repression during the Franco era.

A story to twist you up and fill you with hate. Thankfully short.

This was like reading paint drying. I don’t know if the translation was lacking but I just didn’t get what people are raving about with this one.

Such an odd little book, but a worthwhile odd experience! I love folk horror, and I love the vibes - check out that cover, isn't it great? It was sometimes hard for me to understand because it changes perspective and has some...confusing elements, such as not naming some characters and leaving many things implied but never confirmed to a degree that sometimes left me a bit unsure of what was happening. But the metaphors in this story are abundantly clear. The two main characters in this book live in a haunted, generational trauma trap of a house, and the book is sort of about...how they came to be there, and what they do within the traps that make up their lives.
