This book builds a vivid world that grows and dies over the course of a century. Isolation, recalcitrance, and the predetermination of history drive the characters and the plot.

Well, this was truly something. A tragedy of a cursed and doomed family in Colombia over a period of 100 years. There were parts that blew me away and parts that hollowed me out. Disgusting parts. I just don't understand how people love it so much, how that word can be used for it I don't know. It is an amazing and affecting, wondrous and likely important work. But I did not love it.

this book was a challenging read! the writing was very stream-of-consciousness focused, and so there was less of a reading story, and more just like someone was telling a story in person. this is the first book i’ve read in the magical realism genre.

One of those books that you can’t fully appreciate until you have finished it. Wasn’t going to give it 5 stars until I got to the last page and suddenly found myself wishing I could read it with fresh eyes all over again, with the mystery and unknowing of where it was all going. Where are we all going?

I have no regrets, I love a multi-generational family saga and this one perhaps defined that genre in the modern era… but wow this was a tough read for many reasons, despite the lyrical, flowing prose. I’m glad I read this for a book club where I was able to discuss it with others, because I wouldn’t have gotten as much out of it on my own.

i think this is one of those things where ive read so much magical realism type stories that i didnt realise i was reading the original magical realism. Marquez was doing something very innovative when he wrote this at the time but now its relatively commonplace. regardless, it was very enjoyable!
