How Music Got Free: The End of an Industry, the Turn of the Century, and the Patient Zero of Piracy by Stephen Richard Witt is an incredibly engaging and addictive read. The book masterfully weaves together various narratives and storylines, resembling a captivating work of fiction. It takes you on a journey through the evolution of music and technology, starting from the early days and delving into the format war that influenced the pre-mp3 era.

Through the perspectives of scientists, industry executives, and even regular individuals involved in piracy, you gain insight into the struggles and innovations that shaped this transformative period. The book presents an honest retelling of the experiences of those who lived through the rapid digital shifts driven by technology and capitalism, ultimately leading to the rise of subscription-based music services and a decline in piracy.

One of the highlights for me was the exploration of "patient zero," the individual responsible for leaking a significant portion of the music during that time. Learning about this pivotal figure added a fascinating layer to the narrative.

This is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of music, technology, and the impact of piracy. I was so captivated by the book that I would have devoured it in a single sitting if not for my other responsibilities.

I've felt that when authors usually write these kind of books, they don't really know what they're talking about, and merely researched the information and just regurgitated it. This isn't the case with Witt, as he himself was a "pirate" once upon a time (and possibly still is now). I was a teenager during the peak of these piracy years, and spent many hours downloading media for hours on end, hoarding it even, just because it was fun to have a collection of something you could never possibly afford in a "physical" format.
Beyond that though, what Witt does to make this book truly entertaining and informative at the same time is how he creates an incredibly detailed story of how all these things took place. I often felt that this book could be turned into a movie of sorts, considering how interesting the birth and peak of piracy was, and how so many other "regular joes" were a part of it. As far I as I can tell Stephen Witt has only written one book, but I'd love to see more from him.

Fascinating book if you're at all interested in either music or piracy. Like some other reviews have noted, it leaves out a lot in the story in favor of having a good narrative, but it's still a great book and a great story.

Audiobook! I knew pretty much nothing about the music piracy of the 90s and early 2000s, other than ripping YouTube videos to put mp3s on my iPod, but this was interesting and informative. A bit hard to follow all the different characters the book followed but neat to hear all the science and the craziness that ensued.

A well researched, fascinating look into the music industry that is written in an engaging way. If you are interested or involved in the industry it is an excellent window into it’s corporate and technological sides whilst maintaining a story-like narrative that makes it a real page turner. Overall great read!
