Ever since I was little, stories of the early pioneers have fascinated me, especially when it comes to the legendary Boone family. Having traced my own family history back to theirs (as many Americans can), I can still connect to their story and those of the other brave people who dreamed of a better life for themselves, in spite of the odds. This story took one of the saddest moments in the Boone family’s journey and used it as a jumping-off place for the tale of a fictional girl who was forever changed by that day. Laura Frantz deals with Tempe’s grief in a sensitive way that feels real and healing to the reader. It makes you root for her from the very start. If you like adventurous tales with a heartfelt tenderness at their core, this is a book for you!

Content Warning: injury, gun violence, death, and grief.

I really wanted to like this book, but it just wasn’t that engaging. The premise is good—characters and their back story are well thought-through. This book just didn’t do it for me.

I really enjoy Laura Frantz's writing! This novel takes place in the unsettled of Kentucke territory in the 1700's, where the Tucker family runs an inn for frontiersmen who pass by. Temperance Tucker is a strong, industrious woman living life on the frontier. Her adeptness for the skills of tracking and wilderness living place her in the role to assist a group of surveyors on their journey, led by Sion Morgan.

It wasn't her idea to go with the group, but because her father has a bounty on his head from a deadly altercation with a surveyor, she must lead them away from the inn in order to keep their family safe. But leading them away has dangers of its own.

It's a story of loyalty, hospitality and inner healing.

Author Laura Frantz is a fantastic historical fiction writer. I've enjoyed many of her stories. A Moonbow Night was a sad story to read for me. I would encourage you to read it for yourself.

Ms. Frantz consistently keeps herself on my favorite authors list! The details of the time period that she clearly spends a lot of time researching, the depth of the characters' journeys and how she makes me love them every time, the way she never fails to completely immerse me inside her story and hold me captive until the very last page. Definitely a go-to author for historical fiction! Tempe and Sion's respective journeys and the slow way they come together, all while dealing with the very real dangers of the land around them, is beautifully written. So many times I wanted to shake them or hug them or just bash their heads together and make them realize that all their denials were silly! Reading a Laura Frantz novel is an experience. One that will sweep you away to rough, raw, beautiful Kentucke, pull at your heartstrings, and make sure you never forget the adventure.

This is my first introduction to this author and her work. I did enjoy this author's writing. Although, I may not have been in love with this book, I would try another book from this author. The author brought to life the countryside of Kentucke. For me I really enjoyed Temperance. She is a tomboy. Yet, she is not afraid to show that she can be just if not better than the men. She has accurate skills as a shooter. It was nice when Temperance shut the men up with her shooting and that Sion did not comment but just let Temperance shine.

Although, try as I might I did not feel the romantic relationship between Sion and Temperance. Yes, by the end of the story they felt like a couple. However, the romantic notions were slow to form and sweet if not mild. I mainly was reading the book for the journey and the beautiful land than I was for the characters.
