Two friends deal with one's breast cancer. Poignant without being maudlin. Our book group didn't like the way she pushed all her friends away at the end. The friends just didn't seem to really connect. Maybe that was her point.

Sad & tough book, but I loved it. Really want to read more by this author.

I've had this on my TBR pile for the last ten years and kind of avoided it due to its very sad content. However as much as it is sad, it is also quite inspiring.
Ann and Ruth's friendship is stripped bear when Ruth learns that her lesions are cancerous and she is not given much chance of a survival. She is Ann's only friend and Ann simply doesn't know how she can live once Ruth is gone. But Ruth really does become Ann's inspiration for life - through her own mistakes and regrets and spirit for life itself.
Lovely story of a wonderful friendship.

Brilliant? No. Elizabeth Berg is the kind of reading you do when you need a nice, enjoyable, easy read. It's got charm: I laughed out loud several times.

this is a hallmark special of a book. a quick, but not very good, read about a woman whose best friend is dying of cancer. basically about her, not the dying friend, and how shes gonna be so lonely when the woman dies, since that was her only friend. a kinda whiney book.

a very well written book about a very tough topic.
I loved that the characters were flawed and selfish and so very real. And yet, their love and need for each other (not just the 2 main, but all of them) was just stunning and beautiful in its tragedy. I thought this book would really weigh me down, but, while not uplifting, is a good eye-opener.
