I feel really conflicted by this book. I found the first few pages incredibly gripping and i guess created expectations for how the rest of the novel would go. While we do find out why the daughter kills herself on the first page, we only find out why in the second to last chapter and by that point i’ve mostly lost interest in the cause of her death. I also thought her reason for killing herself to be odd. The affront didn’t seem to match the severity of the consequence. I didn’t really care for any of the characters except for Ranz and it disappointed me that is son, our protagonist, was so dull.
The book says the title of the book, which is usually a feature I really enjoy, but it’s repeated at least five different times which made it irritating instead of endearing.
In the books defence, i struggle to give it a low rating because it had some really gorgeous passages that were quite thought provoking. I also enjoyed the Macbeth parallels. I just can’t get over how exciting the first 2-3 pages were and how mundane and inconsequential 80% of the novel was.
