Powerful and bittersweet. Emotional but I really enjoyed. Debating between 4.5-5 stars

The most meaningful part of this book was about being a caretaker for someone who’s dying and how difficult and selfless that is. I can’t imagine what it feels like to have someone you love slowly turn into someone you don’t know and to watch them deteriorate while having to continue to live your own life. Besides Brian’s impact, I was expecting a bit more and it was a little slow/hard to get through.

That old adage, never judge a book by its cover, couldn’t have been more true for me with The Shore. But also, the cover is perfect. Based on my own bias, I assumed The Shore was going to be a light and fun beachy read, but it was so much deeper and heavier. As the family comes to terms with Brian’s failing health, his wife Margot and their teenage daughter’s Liz and Evy deal with it in very different ways. Margot wants to escape it all, but her daughters want everything to remain the same. I was not prepared for the love story that this truly is, and I was not prepared to silently yell at Margot so many times. Upon finishing the book, I realized that the cover is actually perfect. The shore is their life and livelihood and despite whatever trauma they are dealing with back home, the bright lights and action of the boardwalk go on.

This is an interesting premise and beautiful setting but this is not well written. The descriptions of living with someone with a brain tumor are extremely poignant, and I am terribly sorry the author has this perspective from her own life, caring for her father. But much of the rest reads as if written by pamplemousse7, who fakes knowledge by Googling random facts and peppering them in her writing. The characters and plot are one-dimensional.

I originally picked this up expecting a fun summer read with a Seaside setting (oops) Once I realized this dealt with heavier topics, I thought I’d be gutted and emotional. But instead I was just bored and dragged through this slog. It all fell flat and the writing didn’t work for me.

I loved this book! The characters are so believable and the writing was great. I found myself wanting to get to the book every day. I strongly recommend!

This book somehow combined a beach read vibe with thought-provoking heavy content - I don’t know how it works but I really liked this.
