I definitely agree with others comments that his book is the hardest to get through. Lynley, Havers and the St. James characters have all but disappeared in this storyline. The plot is interesting but convoluted. I'm glad I saw it through to the end but it was a struggle!

My first Elizabeth George book and i wasnt disappointed. Really mind boggling, too many emotions churning throughout the novel.
The time scenario was confusing for me and all along Gideon's memoir there was that confusing time frame!
And climax threw me off totally, so should d reader assume Libby is gonna die and that it was not Richard but Gideon at fault? Am still not entirely sure!

I had a lot of life stuff going on while reading this, so I had a harder time staying with it than most of hers. Still, I found the twist on the last page really unusual. I'm emphasizing it was probably me, not the author or the book so still a 4.

Quite good, but it's been awhile since I read it so I don't remember too many details, except that Lynley's supervisor's affair from 15+ years ago comes to light, and the death of a small child who died decades ago is tied into a string of deaths today.

Not one of my favorite Elizabeth George novels. Way too long! Half way through I stopped reading the Gideon journal and that made it a little better. This could have been a few hundred pages less and still have effectively told the story.

I used to be a huge Lynley fan, but this book was hard work. The story dragged on endlessly and did ultimately not amount to much. I did not like the Gideon entries and eventually started to just skip them. With half as many pages it would probably have been a good book.

For the first 1003 pages of this book, it was a 5 star. Then there were those last 3 pages...

It's a page turner, lots of interesting sub-stories, but the ending was very unsatisfying. The characters suddenly acted unbelievably out of character, there were too many questions left unanswered, and the final attempt at a twist was handled poorly.

This book was long. All the Lynley books are long, but this one was omg-make-it-stop long. The timeline was all screwed up, red herrings were everywhere, and the ending was lame. And yet I kept reading it, didn't I? Yes, I did.
