Felt like Matt’s personal commonplace book for depression. Also made me convinced I could totally write a book like this.

This book was very unstructured, split into four parts and full of various quotes and meaningful philosophical comments and moments, this book is intentional unstructured, and the author makes a point of noting this at the start of the book.
The book feels very grounded on providing hope and inspiration to its readers, and offering guidance for readers to find “the determination to keep walking forward”, and there are various other uplifting quotes and stories throughout the book, all encouraging the reader to find “the light at the end of the tunnel” It is an educational piece, sharing many chapters and verses from other pieces of works, and providing insight into historical figures that may not be so well known.
However as much as the book can feel empowering, it comes across as cold and indifferent, there is nothing really unique that sets this book apart from other self-help stories, there isn't really anything outstanding or personal about the book, it just feels like a collection of inspirational quotes in which their author has given their own little twist and opinion on. I appreciate that the author shares some details that they struggled at various points of their life with mental health, I just wish there was more depth to these and not just labels and acceptance it just makes the book feel a bit flat in my own opinion.

This book is an endless repetition of tumblr quotes. So many messages are told multiple times with the helpful of different metaphors or sometimes even with the help of one.
There are helpful ideas, of course. I am sure that this book can convey the feeling of comfort for some people. To me, the random way of presenting, the content of the book itself felt mostly empty.

After reading the fictional “How To Stop Time” and now his nonfiction work “The Comfort Book,” I’m quickly becoming a big fan of Matt Haig. His words are not overly spiritual and there are no pithy platitudes to be found. Encouragement is rooted in the sharing of his experiences (and others’) as well as logical arguments in favor of hope. All feelings come and go. The good and the bad. Yes we don’t know what’s going to happen and that could be bad but it could be good. Fear and hope BOTH come from uncertainty, so we can sometimes make an active choice to hope instead of fear. “We aren’t at the mercy of the world we can never control, we are at the mercy of a mind we can, potentially, with effort and determination, begin to alter and expand.”
