Best mystery/thriller I've read in a while. Nora Watts reminds me a bit of Kinsey Milhone from the Sue Grafton series, but with a lot more baggage. Looking forward to the next installment!

As my mother-in-law would say, this was very nice, but it was not for me. I read this for Book Club.
I think it's "noir," which I do not care for. The main character (and it's narrated in the first person) spoke in a monotone in my head. I'm not sure if that was the author's intent, but that's what happened. I think maybe she smiled once the whole book? Not for me. Also it was raining all the time, until it was really cold and snowy (but the MC didn't have appropriate clothing) and then she went back to Vancouver where it was raining all the time.
Also it's a "thriller" which just isn't my genre. And a mystery; same.
The writing was fine until near the end where I started to roll my eyes a bit. So I dunno, maybe this is a good book for people who like mysteries and/or thrillers and/or books about a "damaged" woman who is a victim of sexual assault? But I am not one of those people so I couldn't say for sure. Sorry!

Really 2 1/2 stars. A mystery story that was interesting and compelling in the beginning but turns into a mishmash of characters and a very convoluted, messy plot. Don’t know if I would read another by this author m

Good pacing and an interesting main character. The ending of the book fell flat to me.

This felt quite detective / noir-y which is fine but not my specific bag.

Struggled through this one. The plot was too convoluted and implausible. Don’t think I’ll be sticking around for book #2 of this series.

I really wanted to like this as I am looking for a new series. However, I just couldn't connect with Nora the main character.

This book was recommended in one of the panel discussions at the 2020 Bloody Scotland festival. (Thanks to whoever said this!!) I found it on Libby, went for it, and was completely caught up in it right away. Nora Watts is what I think is called a gritty character, but with the tough life she has had, who can blame her.
This was definitely a page turner. There is action, but there is also thinking inside Nora's head - about trust in people and daring to open up, which she can't do and doesn't dare. I have never been to Vancouver or that general area, but I get a real sense of the city and the countryside as Nora investigates what has happened to Bonnie. I confess that I, too, would probably back away from Nora if I met her all smelly on the subway. When we get to be inside Nora's head, we gain a better understanding of her actions and the decisions she makes, for better or for worse.
I would defintely dive straight into the second book, but a) Libby doesn't have (sobs) and b) an ebook is waiting for me on Libby and 4 paper library books are glaring at me from the shelf, so... See you later on, Nora.
