easily one of my favorite travel writers - here he talks more about being a traveler, how one gets bitten and what it can be like to be thrown into completely different and unexpected situations. Highly enjoyable

A book about a book, combining passages from Herodotus' 5c BC Histories with modern events and places. Kapuscinski is a fine writer and this is an interesting and intriguing introduction to Herodotus. It made me want to read the original. And while I thoroughly enjoyed Kapuscinski's approach, I tend to agree with Martine's review here: it was a bit off the mark (interesting that I just finished Travels of Ibn Buttatah, the "Tangerine" in the book mentioned by Martine). But this is a quick and, at times poignant read. It is also a quick read, worth the time in my opinion.

Though I began reading this work with some trepidation, I found it as readable as a novel. Kapuscinski's weaving together of his own travels with those of the ancient Greek writer - Herodotus - turned about to be a wonderfully pleasant, sneaky way of getting me to read some of the "great work."

I now feel a bit less nervous about having to work with the text in my Freshman Studies course this Fall.

I liked this book a lot, but it isn't for everyone.

i am so happy i read this after [b:EAT PRAY LOVE|19501|Eat, Pray, Love|Elizabeth Gilbert|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1269870432s/19501.jpg|3352398] because i had almost forgot good writing could come out of a person who travels the world. ryszard kapuscinski actually reflects on the experience--he's the sponge to elizabeth gilbert's vaccum.

he tells his stories and reads you a book all in one go. highly recommended.
