there was no doubt this book would or could be rated any less than 5 stars. Hannah's deep dive into Icelandic history told through the most heart-wrenching, head-churning accumulation of words is truly unlike anything i've ever read! the writing for one is drop dead gorgeous, i couldn't help but take photos of like every page to savour and never forget. I cried - i balled and i shivered with fear - the slow burn of this story truly got its hold on me. Thank you Hannah for this fictional masterpiece of icelandic history which has for real got me so intrigued and wanting to know more !

Five stars for Ms. Hannah Kent. I listened to this book as an audiobook a couple years ago and it still sticks with me. It is beautifully written, making the world within the book extremely rich. Agnes is a character with no good choices, and yet, I left this story loving her none the less. One of the best books I have read in the thriller genre. Please read content warnings.

this was a good read, I enjoyed all the description of the Icelandic nature and how that impacted their lives in the 1800s. I think I set myself up for disappointment in that I thought it would have a great plot twist but it was what I thought it would be originally, so I was little saddened by that but as a true crime story, makes sense

So tragic and beautifully written. Explores the complexity of life as a woman, as a worker, as a human. The power of narrative to shape our life is a strong feature.
