So tragic and beautifully written. Explores the complexity of life as a woman, as a worker, as a human. The power of narrative to shape our life is a strong feature.

I think this story was well written and atmospheric. Agnes is a very sympathetic character up to a point. I have some minor hang-ups over the ending.

The slow, sometimes painful way in which Agnes' life story unfolds is as beautiful as it is tragic. With the harsh, cold landscape playing an equal part to the superstitious and often cruel people, this book paints a vivid picture of a woman who was an outcast her whole life, and who, in the end, died because of it. And even though you know the ending from the very beginning, as you begin to understand Agnes you cannot help but hope, and, in the end, it hits like an emotional sucker punch.
