Each creature gets a good chunk of information on their historic origins, impact, and even pop culture appearances. Most have been turned into a Pokemon or appeared in other popular anime, so you get a new insight into that critter. About half the entries have a beautiful color illustration of the creature, but I really wish they all did.

This is a solid jumping off point for learning more about Japanese mythology, or just to enrich your anime and video game experiences.

Since I was a kid, I've always been a fan of anything related to mythology and the like. However, I also feel like for the majority of my life, anytime I try to indulge myself in this area, the available literature tends to be heavily imbalanced towards Greek and Norse lore. Anything I read those realms is a genuine treat, and The Book of Japanese Folklore has proven to be no exception. As someone with little prior familiarity with Japanese lore, it proved to be a great introduction - each and every entry was just flat-out fun in its wonderfully informative way.

I love the info, the way it's structure and the drawings. It's really easy to read, interesting and informative.

A great reference to many of the monsters (yōkai) and more (including some of the gods (kami) and heroes and such) from Japanese folklore. Alphabethically listed, every entry starts with a name in English, followed by the kenji, the pronounciation, one or more translation and often alternate names, and also an illustration (most of the time). An overview with historical sources and other notes follows, then one or more stories/anecdotes, and finally, a short list of books, anime, movies, videos games, etc where the creature (or some variation of) has appeared in modern times.
