We recently received this and another in this series - [b:The Mermaids of Jamaica|61272916|The Mermaids of Jamaica (Against All Odds)|Claudia Bellante|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1655046874l/61272916._SX50_.jpg|96611891] - and I love them both!
The conversational tone feels like a friend telling you about their other friends, that you hope to meet one day soon, and when you meet them, you will be full of admiration, knowing their accomplishments and the struggles they overcame to achieve each goal.
Along the way, all of us who live elsewhere are given a chance to learn so much of the context and the lived experiences of young people in a different place.
The illustrations are vividly colorful and captivating, but slightly different in the two books I read in the series - not uniform, but individualized to reflect the specifics of the locale and the particular characters who are featured.
Highly recommended - perhaps best for readers in grades 2nd to 6th, especially for an adult reading aloud to a child.
