I was interested in reading this because it sounded like a funny alien roadtrip romp. What I got was... sort of that, but not as funny as I had hoped and not executed as well as it could have been.
It WAS lighthearted and fun. It WAS a roadtrip. There WAS an alien.
But it was also kind of frustrating how much talking about hypothetical stuff they do then make decisions without any real evidence to go on.There was a lot of talking that didn't really lead anywhere. No character development, no romance development, no worldbuilding, no plot progression. Just, talking talking talking.
It was frustrating how often the FMC Francie was acting without thinking, running into a problem immediately. She was also a little gullible, never questioning things. I saw some comments saying she had no personality and you know what, you're right. She really didn't.
As a romantic comedy, it kind of sucks. It's mid at best. There's a smidgen of some budding romance but the final declarations of love were heavy handed for the amount of feelings actually developed during the course of the roadtrip.
As a fun sci fi romp, it's also mid but I liked it better thinking of it this way. I really loved the alien character Indy the best out of all of the characters and despite being such a short amount of the book, the language communication stuff and learning about the aliens towards the end were my favorite parts. Towards the end of the book, I was flat out annoyed at the MC Francie when her first request wasn't immediately to see or talk to Indy. Like c'mon!
There's more stuff I could gripe about but it's ultimately minor and doesn't really alter my rating of the book so meh.
WTF was that ending? That's where you left it? Really? Why. It felt so abrupt, like the author decided that it was long enough and they didn't feel like writing anymore so they stopped mid-action, mid-dialogue. The End.
Would I recommend this? Eh, probably not.
