I chose this book because of the title. I wanted to see if it would prove to be a book I could recommend to mothers of young children, which includes my daughter.
It turned out to be so much more than I expected. There’s the front section that the parent reads to the child which gives suggestions in childlike terms and then the back portion is for the parents in adult language.
The back section breaks down the psychology of boredom and gives suggestions for redirection and facilitation of growth in areas of time management and problem solving. It helps child and parent(s) work together toward an uplifting outcome.
It also provides a gentle guide as to when your child might need more help than you can provide and a list of resources to assist in seeking said help.

- Parents are guided to be supportive instead of ignoring his plight or settling him in front of the TV with a snack

"Now when I'm bored and I can't think of anything to do...I get curious about the things around me."
Everyone feels bored sometimes. It's just how it goes. But what can we do during those times? Our unnamed main character wonders this to his parents, who let him know that being bored can be fantastic! It allows us to wonder and ask questions, or it can mean that our bodies need a little rest. There is no bad way to use your time, especially when creativity and imagination are involved.
With lovely illustrations that are just as colorful and imaginative as our main character and a reference section to boot, Sometimes When I'm Bored is a great guidebook for children and parents alike.
