This was a very challenging and beautifully woven novel. I had to read this book a little differently, constantly going back to the previous pages and feeling scattered, disjointed throughout. The novel took me on a similar journey as its scarcely engaged narrator as he struggled to not only find but experience the life of his father. Through Juan and the people of Media Luna, we navigate grief, abandonment, religious guilt etc  through a multitude of characters stuck in their own purgatory. Are they alive or dead? Is this before Juan's arrival, during Pedro's youth or a completely different timeline? I had so many questions while I was reading some answered some not but yeah I loved this and definitely need to reread!

I want to add more, but I don’t think I could describe this book if I tried to.

It is truly incredible how much this book accomplishes with so little text. I wish I was fluent in Spanish so that I could read Rulfo as he originally wrote - apparently the existing translations don't quite do justice to his style. There's a lot in the novel to reflect on, maybe particularly our own wide-reaching impact on the people around us and what we owe to our communities rather than just to ourselves. Really incredible, an immediate favorite.

That was so disorienting but also interesting. I liked it, but I also don't really feel like I have a grasp of the book. Feels like one of those books you need to reread multiple times to not miss any piece of information, and to really get the whole picture.
