Well...that was something. This one is boring and slow for the first 80 percent and then the ending is just absolutely batshit insane-but not in a good way. I didn't predict any of the reveals but I think that is more of a flaw in the way the story was told. I don't mind an unreliable narrator, which this had, but this was more of the characters not acting how they should've based on the reveals at the end. The writing was also really choppy and the chapters often ending very choppily. Just not a well executed novel, which leads it to be my biggest disappointment of the years so far because I really enjoyed The Woman in the Window.

My best friend is a huge mystery fan, I am usually not. She recommended this book and kept saying i must read it. I dithered but eventually picked it up, I loved the writing style and beautiful descriptions, but probably would have put it down had my friend not been so emphatic in her praise for this book. So I kept going, and am so glad that I did. This is a book that is going to stick in my brain. That if anyone asks for a book recommendation, I will first ask if they have read this.

Awful.
Story about unsolved mystery of disappearance of son and mother 20 years ago.
A writer is invited by the husband, a famous author, to write up a memoir of his life. At the same time this writer, a woman, decides to look into the mystery .

In the end.
Turns out that this writer is none other than the missing boy who transed into a girl in his teens.

Really stupid.
