This is my first time reading Jack London - the way he pieces words together, as well as the social commentary between the lines, is so beautiful. I knew there’d be violence, but I wasn’t expecting it to be as graphic as it was. Of course this was written in a different time, but I think the disturbing images made me take off a half star off. But to see a dog go through strong character development was unlike anything I’d read.

The story was short and fast, and somehow made me cheer and get angry for the sake of a wolf dog. The older writing can sound weird at times, but the story was great and the ending was more than satisfying.

I understand the deeper meaning of the book, I really do. Especially when read alongside The Call of the Wild (which I will be reading next). I just can't get past the animal abuse.

Excellent book--a classic for a reason. However, some may find the concepts and language to be very dated.

A very good metaphor for the nature versus nurture debate. The story of how a dog is used and abused by poeple and its personality molded by circumstance while still trying to uphold instincts. The writing is fantastic and reflective. Very quotable. The animals do not, I think, act like animals, but act like our perceptions of animals mixed with anthropomorphizing. Many dead dogs. Some Racism.
