blandly charming, which isn't an insult! it just is. ye olde steminist meets so-called rake... as usual not much of a rake except when he purposely tarts her up to take her to a gambling house for Plot Contrivance reasons.

there is a certain type of book that could be 200 pages lighter. this is one. an adventure story allows for a lot of sidebars and even after, the hero has an ungodly amount of Feelings for pages and pages beyond the pale.

Considering some of the dreck I've been reading lately, this one is just too absurd to finish.

3.5 stars rounded up for some moments that truly made me lol and for a STEM-crazy heroine. The adventure Min and Payne go on makes for a quick-paced story with lots of settings and characters and shenanigans (aka tall tales).

This is the kind of book where you can tell the author was having fun writing it.

9/9/22 UPDATE:: I listened to a podcast with Tessa Dare as the guest and she said she can't choose favorites but she had the most fun writing this one. It definitely shows.

Forward thinking, plucky heroine meets rake turned ardent suitor. Not really my cup of tea. Falling asleep while reading and having to listen to numerous chapters again. It was fine but not something that I’ll remember a week from now.
