I ended up just killing time reading this predictable book that was about Nick Janzek's testosterone driven view of the world as he moves from Boston to Charleston and is immediately drawn into a murder mystery of who killed the mayor. This book is predictable in its portrayal of the bad guys, Nick's apparently unending work ethic (not to mention his tragic background), and the complete world view of women simply as objects - functioning as beautiful and at best useful but always as objects navigating the male world or perhaps as victims. I was hoping for more Charleston although there was a bit. I got the impression it was an outsider's view which may be far since Janzek was indeed the Yankee who had moved to Charleston. My rating is 2 stars for an unimaginative mystery.

The main part of the plot was decent, and the narrative was well-paced with no lulls. The characters were well-rounded and believable, with some being likable and others not so much. There was also a diverse cast of characters. The story revolves around the rich, powerful, and egotistical stomping all over the little guy, which is nothing new and falls into an age-old cliche.

Overall, I found the story enjoyable and entertaining. The build-up to the ta-da moment was well done. However, I did find the end of the investigation a bit convenient and flat
