A little too classic in its style for me - a way of writing that often seemed superficial and skimmed over feelings and relationships. But once I got into that, it was a sweet and simple tale of a French servant who suffers after everyone she loves leaves - even the parrot she loved so dearly. (See even I'm writing in that way now.)

A humbling story of a servant. A truly devoted soul. This is more humbling for the reader, though. An uneducated young girl with no family advantage and only poor luck lives a life of servitude and gratitude. It is difficult to read in days when we take so much for granted. The story takes place in a back water town in Brittany France in the early 1800's. Life is recognizable but feels like a different planet. I highly recommend it in the days we consider challenging times - I think a little perspective helps .

sorry to monsieur flaubert but this was not it. would've made more sense as a long book cause too much happened in too little time.

ça faisait un petit moment qu'il traînait dans ma pal, je l'ai lu en numérique parce que je l'avais pas sur moi oups (c'était gratuit sur kindle) et j'ai été agréablement surprise !!
