Flaubert catches lightning in a bottle. Utterly phenomenal. I wept as no book has ever made me weep before.

A little too classic in its style for me - a way of writing that often seemed superficial and skimmed over feelings and relationships. But once I got into that, it was a sweet and simple tale of a French servant who suffers after everyone she loves leaves - even the parrot she loved so dearly. (See even I'm writing in that way now.)

A humbling story of a servant. A truly devoted soul. This is more humbling for the reader, though. An uneducated young girl with no family advantage and only poor luck lives a life of servitude and gratitude. It is difficult to read in days when we take so much for granted. The story takes place in a back water town in Brittany France in the early 1800's. Life is recognizable but feels like a different planet. I highly recommend it in the days we consider challenging times - I think a little perspective helps .

Every dimension of Flaubert's immense genius shines through this short book, which is now a favorite of mine.
