Wooow this was really good!! Started to read it for some romantasy (there was almost none), stayed for the fantasy, I really liked the world building!

i really need to stop reading YA and expecting it not to be aimed at 13 year olds. i probably would've liked this more if i was in the intended age range.

that being said, i found Tarisai's bond with her ray-siblings to be very unbelievable as we only really got to know two of them well. The others were always referred to in lists or referenced, but we got to know almost nothing about the eleven closest people to Tarisai.

Solid 4 stars! This was really enjoyable and really well written! I’m definitely going to pick up the sequel. I’m not fully sure why it’s not it give it just doesn’t have 5 star vibes if that makes sense? I would highly recommend it regardless, especially to younger readers starting to want to read fantasy.
