This may be the only time I will say that the movie was definitively better than the book… The characters were much less likable

Jaws is my favorite film ever - it’s just about perfect. Reading this was a massive disappointment and I believe this is a rare example of “the movie did it better”. Characters are poorly developed, the mayor/mob subplot is unnecessary. Only Ellen seems to have some any kind of growth.
I can’t name a single book to film change I disagree with, save for excluding more of the average people in Amity. This novel is Long Island’s version of An Enemy of the People. For as often as Benchley hinted at the white terrorizing Amity due to environmental changes (at least four times by my count), I felt attributing the shark attacks to an “act of God” was a cop out (no pun intended).
Furthermore; book Quint is both subdued and less tragic, much to the detriment of his character. He’s far less captivating, even if his one-liners are gold.
To all the “more shark” comments: while I don’t necessarily disagree, you sound just like the Queensboro RV family.

Having seen the film a few times growing up I was expecting to be chilled from reading the book but what I got was an underwhelming feeling really. In my opinion too much was made of the affair between two characters and not enough actual shark action. I was expecting viseral descriptions of shark attacks and plenty of tension but it turned out to be quite mild in my view. The way this book ends is quite bizarre I actually thought I must be missing some pages such was the abrupt finish. I think I would still recommend this book if only as an accompaniment to the superior version being the film.
Similar to the movie except all of the characters are total assholes. I'm going to stick to the Richard Dreyfuss version of Matt Hooper thanks! That being said, it WAS interesting to read and compare the differences between the book and the movie, and I did love the intro chapter A LOT.

Also: flüssiger Lesespass ohne allzu grossen Schrecken und Aufregung. Gut geeignet für den Strand:-)

Come for the giant shark, stay for the clever and biting allegory on class and socioeconomic inequality.
