Een indrukwekkend verhaal, geschreven vanuit het kamp en later ook niet meer bewerkt, zodat gebeurtenissen zo waarheidsgetrouw mogelijk zijn beschreven. Je volgt Eddy (Hans in het boek), die als zich als arts vrijwillig aanmeldde om in Westerbork te gaan werken. Daar ontmoette hij Friedel en ze trouwen. Samen werden ze gedeporteerd naar Auschwitz, waar ze in verschillende barakken belandden: Eddy werd tewerkgesteld als verpleger van gevangenen, Friedel belandde in de vrouwenbarak waar de medische experimenten werden uitgevoerd.

Eddy beschrijft zijn dagelijkse belevenissen, wat hij moest doen, gesprekken met medegevangenen, hoe met hem omgegaan wordt en hoe hij telkens probeert om met Friedel in contact te blijven. Af en toe vond ik het wat van de hak op de tak verteld, miste ik wat overzicht wat je in bijvoorbeeld romans over deze periode wel hebt, maar Eddy had zelf natuurlijk ook geen overzicht en leefde per dag. Dat element maakt het boek dus ook weer sterk. In soms kleine opmerkingen beschrijft hij grote, vreselijke gebeurtenissen, waardoor je het boek langzaam moet lezen om alles in je op te kunnen nemen. Hij doet verslag van wat er om hem heen gebeurt, analyseert het gedrag van iedereen, gevangenen en nazi’s, en observeert veel, vaak zonder daar een eigen oordeel te verbinden. Hij probeert het goede in iedereen te blijven zien, blijft liefhebben en moed houden. Dat maakt het een nauwkeurig en uniek document, waardoor je een inkijk krijgt in het echte kampleven en alle verschrikkingen die de gevangenen moesten doorstaan.

A sad but decent read

I don’t really know what to say about this book… it was was well written and absolutley horrific. I think everyone should have to read this book but at the same time I don’t want anyone to have to experience the sadness and anger it will provoke.
It is believed to be the only complete book written inside Auschwitz and it definitely gave me more deatil, knowledge and understanding of the atrocities that happened there. Although it is a personal account, the author wrote it in the third person and gave the main character the name Hans, as a way of distancing himself from the horrors he experienced.
There really aren’t words to do justice to this book. What humans are capable of is so deeply disturbing and it would be easier to just not read books like this one, to pretend that these nightmares can’t be true, but I think we must. No matter how upsetting it is, we have to read the stories by those who survived, to honour them and to believe them.

We are fortunate that the author was able to write his diary while in the concentration camp. This book was painful to read but so necessary. Let's not forget what power and intolerance can do to some people and the horrors that some humans are capable of committing. Thanks to the de Wind family for having the book translated to English.

Last Stop Auschwitz is a fascinating, yet heart-breaking insight into life in Auschwitz, fighting to freedom, fighting for love and fighting to survive. Unlike many of the books and stories set in the concentration camps, Last Stop Auschwitz is able to perfectly capture the feeling, the confusion and the chaos of life inside a concentration camp in a very authentic-feeling way.

Reading this, it is important to keep in mind that this is a translated edition and at times, certainly feels like it, with constant references and German words that the reader may not understand can make it difficult to follow along but using the context of the overall situation helps to get the gist of the content.
