Is this book good? I dont know. It’s well written and immensely interesting, but it’s also problematic and like many Anne Rice books too caught up in her odd interpretations about what lies at the heart of people.

I thought this was really good. It takes a hot second to get going, but I think it’s worth sticking with it. My favorite parts of the book are the Mayfair files section and the ending. For a small section towards the end of the book I felt a strong sense of dread and I wish this was more prominent throughout the book, especially the ending with how the end is sort of open. That might of just been me, though. Considering the contents of the book and repeating history/foreshadowing, I probably should have felt more dread.
Another thing I really liked was when Michael realized he had become “the man.”

It honestly has no business being this long. The “Yes, rape me!” and the pedophilia, incest and other… uncomfortable aspects of the book were big yikes. That being said, the narrative and the plot in itself is really cool. Part 2 is a clear highlight.

DNF'd - it was all a little horny and then the library audiobook app said your time is up someone else is in line, and i just wasn’t invested enough to get back in line to renew

came back - reader, I got back in line to renew. This was a ride! Very dark and disturbing at the end, the use of the word "cock" spikes, and it's just not fabulous in the audiobook. Major TW for incest all the way through until the end;
the parts where Rowan is sort of fantasizing about Lasher in human form, kind of her son ???, were the worst

That all said, it's definitely gripping and a real odyssey to read. A book this long I would often say should be edited or broken up, but I do think it works. Do not think this will be a reread but glad I did.
