This was a very touching story. But I definitely wish it was longer. I wanted more details about the author's interactions with the penguin, more details about life in Argentina at the time, more details about the author's life post-penguin. But overall, what we are shown is a beautiful memoir.

This was a delightful and heartfelt book about an English man who rescues a penguin from an oil spill. He tries hard to clean the penguin and return him to the waters but the penguin refuses to leave his side. Affectionately named Juan Salvador, we learn about Tom Michell's adventures about ultimately taking care of the penguin. From smuggling the penguin across the border to playing with the local kids and bonding, there is much hilarity throughout this book. There is also some heartbreak but I feel that is to be expected when it comes to a true story about a penguin rescue. Juan Salvador is one charming penguin and Tom Michell is a great writer, reeling you in right from the start.
This audiobook was made even better with the fact that Bill Nighy narrated it. I felt that I could really picture everything happening. I highly recommend this book as it will make you smile throughout.

Who told this guy that this could be a book? A blog post, maybe. But a book? There just isn't much substance here. "I learned about caring for people because of a penguin I adopted. But at the end I learned the penguin didn't care about me, it just wouldn't go back into the ocean by itself." The end.

Very cute subject matter, well told, and delightfully narrated (audiobook version). As heartwarming animal books go, the ending of this one wasn't so bad. I usually don't even finish this type of book when I see the end coming (Marley & Me, Dewey, etc.) but I made it through this one and didn't feel depressed after. Phew!

A joyous book (and Bill Nighy’s reading is possibly my favourite audiobook narrations ever).

Magical, uplifting, life affirming.
