It could have been the translation but I felt a bit disconnected from the characters throughout this. Like I was being fed facts rather than being told a story. Either way, a nice reminder that families all have their issues behind the scenes.

A very deep look into families and relationships that shows things can change no matter what you have planned. Great characters.

This is a very interesting narration of three adult siblings's reactions to their parents' divorce announcement. Each section is a perusal of each sibling's most intimate thoughts and they had very interesting (worth underlining or writing it down) insights into their feelings and memories. There was no sugar-coating and inevitably none of the characters were particularly likeable, even if you had sympathy for their problems. I ended up liking Hakon more than the others, perhaps because we had more things in common.

The one criticism I have is that, after a while, it became a little repetitive and not as fresh as it was in the beginning. There was also a grammar mistake (who's instead of whose) in an otherwise pretty seemless translation.

I liked the unusual ending a lot.

What happens when a couple decides to end their 40-year marriage? Not so much to them, but to their grown children. The book varies between the perspectives of the children - Liv, Ellen and Håkon. I went into this without much expectation, but within a few pages I was struck by the family dynamics. There were so many similarities between this family and my own that I found myself smiling with recognition. My parents are still together, but still, this was often funny and poignant because so many things were familiar. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.
